The tablet can be easily rooted, kernel sources and a TWRP are also available, so the base for an original android development is already there. EMUI is probably not everyone´s favorite but in that case there should be enough alternative launchers available. The original ROM is already on Android 6 and Nougat is in pipe so the tablet is not going to be outdated so soon. The tablet supports also HEVC/H265 playback which is not standard for most android tablets. The 8" size is also perfect for mobile use, not as small as 7" but also not too big like a 10" Display. Most other tablets do use the 4:3 aspect ratio for their displays which is inconvenient and annoying for movie playback due to letterboxing. It´s also perfect for (mobile) movie consumption, really good internal speakers (very impressive what Harman Kardon did here) and a bright 16:10/16:9 high resolution display. The price performance is good compared to other tablets especially compared to Samsung Galaxy tablets. I really like my smaller P9's rear fingerprint sensor, but I guess on a phablet fingers don't naturally fall on any particular spot on the rear of the larger case. While doing the initial finger/thumb scan, after you've scanned 50% and for it to 'see' the rest of your print, you're forced to position your finger/thumb way too close to the screen which then thinks you've tapped an from the scanning process. Only minor annoyances are the Micro USB plug, rather than Huawei's usual/newer Type C used in my P9, and the fingerprint sensor being a bit awkward at times - particularly during setup. I've yet to find a file it couldn't play.

And it is - it's really an overgrown P9, just as fast, but also great for watching videos on long haul flights. My phone for the last year has been an excellent Huawei P9, and since it is still as snappy as the day I got it (unlike my old Samsung Galaxy which was getting quite laggy between apps after a few months), I decided the M3 was a good choice. I've been using a MediaPad M3 for a week, replacing a frustratingly slow iPad 2.
